Weight management helps your pet reach a healthy weight, which helps increase their lifespan. Overweight pets are more susceptible to a range of health issues and diseases that can negatively impact their quality of life. In addition to adjustments to their diet, weight management includes behavioural modifications that create long lasting changes to your pet’s health. Is weight management a diet?
Weight management is more than a diet. Depending on your pet’s age, breed and lifestyle, our veterinary team will determine their ideal weight. Pets are often overweight without their owners even realizing. We’ll develop a weight management plan that’s tailored to your pet’s unique needs, including restricting their daily calorie intake, behaviour modification to curb begging, feeding schedule and regular exercise. Weight loss helps decrease the likelihood of your pet member developing:
- Arthritis
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- Heart disease
- Cancer
What incentives can I give my pet for doing well?
Your pet’s good behaviour should be rewarded. However, you don’t want to do anything to undermine your pet’s progress like feeding them unhealthy treats. Treats should only take up 10% of your pet’s daily calories. In addition to exercise or play, healthy treats you can give your pet occasionally include:
- Broccoli
- Apples
- Green peas
- Carrots
- Watermelon
